How to Replace an audi q7 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the audi spare keys in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.
A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.
