Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

bedside sleeper cot cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents sleep close to their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only recommended for use up to 6 months, when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that you can use throughout the house, as well as an option to rock manually. It was also simple to assemble and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used by children up to the age of three. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from both large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot mattress. If you want your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in a bigger cot, it's a good idea to pick the larger one.

Jasmine, an MFM mother who tested the product at home, liked that it was slightly larger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too big for the room of her baby. It's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a new mattress every time your baby grows. Height

When selecting a twin bedside cot crib pick one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It also needs to be able of being dropped down out of the way so that you can lift your baby towards you for night feeds or soothing. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C Section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to get their babies out of traditional Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, other mums prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option and one of our mom testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible part that you can press down at the touch of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance generally about 6 months. This is due to the possibility of being suffocated. It is also important to remember that if you select a bassinet/cheap bedside cot sleeper that can convert into a cot, you will need to remove the sides as soon as your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to lavish. Some of the most luxurious options include features like an inbuilt light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep. Another option is a swivelling footrest that allows you to reach your child in order to feed them. There are also models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air for instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that allows you to take your baby to the crib and move them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require a the bed for extended periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, however it folds up into its bag for travel, making it relatively compact when it's not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also appreciated the bedside crib's function. She claimed that it was designed for parents and babies. It is lightweight and easy to move. She also said that the swivelling bassinet base was fantastic because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is the fact that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or their nappy. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. Look for a design that lets you lower one side with the press of a button so you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of bed. This is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. You should also be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, including pillows and duvets, which can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues that included gaps between the newborn bedside cot sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However, the CPSC found that these requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents where infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second clause to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers which would permit them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable. This attachment can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is considering these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
