Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without fear of SIDS. However they are only recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will need to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, loved the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also comes with the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden bedside cot cots, large and standard that can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. The larger of the two is a good idea when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of at least three years old.

MFM mum home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. She says that it is easy to get the baby in and out of the cot during night feeds or for soothing and that the quality is far superior to other cots she has seen that are less sturdy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product it's a drop-off bassinet that can be moved around the house, and it rocks too. It also comes with an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. Height

When selecting a bedside crib, choose one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able of being dropped down out of the way so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or soothing. This feature is particularly helpful if you are recovering from a C Section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

It is also important to consider the height you would like the base of your crib to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their children from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point and others prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It has a collapsible side which you can use to touch the button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside crib to cot sleeping device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head up with no assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. Be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert the cheap bedside cot sleeper into a cot, they must take the sides off once they are ready to do this. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from simple to lavish. The more luxurious options may include features like a built-in night light, a soothing centre that plays sounds and music and comes with two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get out of bed. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require bed for longer durations of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying it was simple to use and made reaching her baby much more manageable particularly after her c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than some of the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its travel bag so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mom home tester Leya also liked the functionality of this bedside crib, explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is a fantastic design that is very maneuverable and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappy. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from an C-section. You should look for a design which allows you to lower the bed's side by pressing a button. This will allow you to easily lift your child up without having to get out of the bed. This is essential, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as duvets and pillowcases which could cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that these beds meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't feasible or effective in reducing the number of instances in which infants are trapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is considering these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
