Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs are a cot with a bassinet style that fixes to the side of your bed. Some have a side that can be lowered for easy access, while others have an inclined design that is perfect for babies who have reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina said that this crib was simple to put together, and the instructions were clear. It was a simple build. It folds into an extremely compact size and comes with a handy travel bag.

Easy to assemble

Bedside cribs are generally easy to set up, and are on the smaller side so they can be easily tucked away beside your bed. They are also lighter, making them more mobile. Georgina one of our MFM home testers, was extremely pleased with the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super easy to build with clear instructions and easy zips." This crib can also be used as a travel cot, and comes with a convenient bag to carry it around moving. It has multiple mesh windows that allow for ventilation, and the adjustable height means it can fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside have a side panel that can be lowered, giving you an easy access to your baby without having to get out of bed. This is a great solution for breastfeeding mums or those who wish to be close to their child throughout the night but do not want to risk co-sleeping (which is linked with an increased risk of SIDS).

Many models come with an integrated rocking feature. This can be a very comforting experience for your baby and aid them fall asleep. Some cribs offer a recline position that can be beneficial if your baby suffers from reflux or colic. These should only be used under supervision, and a health professional or a GP should be consulted prior to trying this position.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, allowing the comfort of sleeping with your partner without the associated risks (check whether the crib you're considering is compliant with the latest safety standards though). Some cribs let you lower the barrier, but raise it again after you lift baby out. This is better for parents concerned about their child's ability to roll off their mattress.

The Luah, which won the Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, or Moses Basket in 2021, is designed to clip on to bedsteads and divans however, it requires a longer strap (check your specifications to make sure your bed is able to accommodate). The large design has an opening side panel and a patented perforated bottom that creates air cushioning to increase air flow. There's also an integrated set-up for reflux and the ability to swivel 360 degrees, allowing you to turn the crib according to your baby's preferred position.

If you're looking for something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee comes with oak legs with a variety of fabric options that complement your decor. It's also easy to assemble. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was in a position to put it together quickly and without needing to consult any instructions. It is also a great travel cot. It folds flat and can be popped into bags.

The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger capacity, but it is small and simple to attach to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to assemble, though she felt the instructions could have been clearer regarding the zips.

Easy to clean

When you're looking at travel cots or bedside cribs be sure to look for models that come with a mattress cover that is machine-washable. That will help you keep it clean from spills, nappies, sick babies and drips. You should also select a model that is easily disassembled to allow you to clean and disinfect all the corners.

This is important, as it's the best way to ensure that all dirt and germs have been eliminated. Check that the sides of the crib are secure to ensure that your baby doesn't slide off or become trapped.
