The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
