During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
